Village, Laikha Township, Southern Shan State. He is the 7th of 10 children born to Loong San Kham Au (a master practitioner of traditional Shan medicine) and Pa San Swe. In May 1973, at seven years old, he entered novice samanera-hood under the preceptorship of Ven. Kesara (a member of the State Central Sangha Nayaka Committee) at Thiri Mingalar Brick Monastery in Laikha. Subsequently, he studied foundational Pariyatti scriptures at Kyaung Pan Monastery in Laikha, Pitaka Monastery in Panglong, Wai Lu Wan Pariyatti Learning Center in Taunggyi, and Kan Gyi Pariyatti Learning Center in Nyaungshwe. At age 15, he relocated to the Sasana Mandaing Pali University Monastery in Bago to pursue Higher Level ( Ah-Gyi-Tan ) and Dhammacariya (Dhamma Teacher) studies. Religious Examinations and Higher Ordination In 1985, at age 19, he passed the government examinations conducted by the Ministry of Home and Religious Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, receiving the Sāsanadhaja Dhammācariya title. That same year, he earned a second title— Saddhammodaya Dhammācariya —by passing the Bago Sasana Mandaing Pali University’s Pali-medium exam with first-class honors. Additionally, before completing his first Vassa (monastic retreat) as a fully ordained monk, he earned a third title— Abhipāla Dhammācariya —at the Shan-language Dhammacariya examinations organized by the All Shan State Sangha Association in Panglong. Following these academic achievements, on May 2, 1985, he received higher ordination ( Upasampadā ) at the Khandha Ordination Hall of Wai Zayanta Monastery in Mawlamyine. His preceptor was Abhidhaja Mahāratthaguru Bhaddanta Nāgasenābhivaṃsa (the Chief Presiding Sayadaw of Taung Lay Lone Monastery), sponsored through the four requisites by primary benefactress Daw Yee and her family. Higher Education and Academic Journey Sayadaw continued his studies in Buddhist literature and the English language across Mandalay, Yangon, and Thailand. In 1990, he traveled to Sri Lanka to further his academic career, earning three master's-level degrees: Master of Arts (MA) from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, Colombo (1992) Second Master of Arts (MA) from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka (1993) Master of Philosophy (MPhil) from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka (1996) While attending university, he taught Buddhism classes in English to Sri Lankan students on weekends. In 1996, Sri Lankan monk Ven. Galayaye Piyadassi Mahathero invited Sayadaw to Britain to give Dhamma talks and teach children at Sunday School at his center in London. During his missionary work there, he applied for doctoral programs at prestigious institutions like London University and Cambridge University. Although he received admission offers, he could not enroll at that time due to a lack of financial documentation for tuition and living expenses, requiring him to wait patiently for another opportunity. In 2000, supported by a recommendation letter from a donor, he gained admission to the University of Oxford for his doctoral studies. In 2004, he completed his dissertation titled "Idealism and Pragmatism: A Study of Monastic Education in Myanmar and Thailand from the 17th Century to the Present" and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil/Ph.D.) degree. In 2003, aiming to make Buddhist literature broadly accessible, he founded the Oxford Buddha Vihara in Oxford, UK. Working in partnership with Oxford University, the monastery conducts research and teaches the core essence of Buddhist teachings. Sayadaw’s journey from a small town in Laikha, Shan State, to earning a doctorate at Oxford University required immense dedication, particularly in learning English. In the 1980s, learning English was frowned upon by many senior monks and viewed unfavorably by the lay community. Despite this, as a 17-year-old senior student monk, he quietly spent his one-month summer vacation searching for and attending English language classes in Yangon instead of returning home to Shan State. International Missionary Work Since 1993, Sayadaw has conducted Vipassana meditation retreats in numerous countries, including Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, South Korea, Hungary, Spain, and Thailand. He has also established branch monasteries of the Oxford Buddha Vihara. He has served as an organizer, Secretary-General, and Vice President of the International Council for the United Nations Day of Vesak (ICUNDV), where he currently serves as an executive officer. In 2007, he brought together Buddhist universities worldwide to establish two major international bodies: International Association of Buddhist Universities (IABU) International Association of Theravada Buddhist Universities (IATBU) He serves as the Secretary-General for both associations, guiding global Buddhist missionary initiatives. Since 2009, he has periodically taught Pali language and Vipassana meditation at universities across the globe. Currently, Sayadaw resides across the Oxford Buddha Vihara in Oxford (UK), the Oxford Buddha Vihara in Yangon (Myanmar), and Shan State Buddhist University in Taunggyi. Since 1996, he has actively spread the Dhamma through lectures and retreats at London University, Cambridge University, Oxford University, high schools and colleges across London, and private homes of local Buddhists in cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Wales. His European missions include annual trips to open meditation retreats in Spain, Hungary, and Serbia. In 2018, he expanded these efforts by founding the Oxford Buddha Vihara (Serbia) and the Oxford Buddha Vihara (OBV) Retreat Centre at Park Farm in Britain, where people of all backgrounds and faiths can practice meditation. In Thailand, he conducts meditation retreats three times a year for youth and adults. Domestic Missionary and Social Work Since 2005, appointed as a Professor by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Sayadaw has served at the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University on Dhamma Pala Hill, Mayangone Township, Yangon. He supervises doctoral dissertations, evaluates research papers, and leads international conferences, playing a key role in connecting domestic and global Buddhist scholars and students. In his birthplace—Nong Pan Village, Laikha Township—he donated his ancestral house and land to the local community. The site was dedicated as a Dhamma hall for religious days and serves as the base for the Capacity Building Youth (CBY) association. Established on his 50th birthday in 2014 with the consent of his siblings, CBY supports underprivileged children and youth who face barriers to continuing their education. Sayadaw also leads annual efforts to renovate and expand the Laikha Township Public Hospital and organizes mobile medical units to provide healthcare services in rural villages. Furthermore, he established the Save the Mother Earth (S.M.E.) Group , a youth social service initiative. Working alongside government departments and NGOs, local indigenous youth participate in environmental conservation efforts—including tree planting, systematic waste management, and providing educational materials and school funding to youth. On February 7, 2016 (Shan State Day), Sayadaw founded Shan State Buddhist University (SSBU) on Pyinya Bawdi Hill in Bhura Phyu Ward, Taunggyi, Shan State. His mission is to establish a world-class higher education system for Buddhist studies in Myanmar, enabling advanced research and instruction in Buddhist philosophy and teachings in English. SSBU currently accepts and educates both Master's and Doctoral candidates. When building the university, Sayadaw prioritized the library. Even before completing his Ph.D., he collected English books on Buddhism from around the world whenever he returned to Myanmar. Together with his disciples, he gathered ancient manuscripts, parabaiks (traditional folded books), and modern publications, supplemented by donations from supporters. Scholars in Myanmar studies based in the UK have also donated lifelong book collections, which are preserved in designated Special Collections bearing the donors' names. Open every day except Sunday, the library is actively used by monks, nuns, and lay researchers conducting Buddhist studies.1d:T667c,

Early Life and Novitiate

Oxford Sayadaw Dr. Ashin Dhammasami was born on November 22, 1964, in Nong Pan Village, Laikha Township, Southern Shan State.

At age 15, he relocated to the Sasana Mandaing Pali University Monastery in Bago to pursue Higher Level (Ah-Gyi-Tan) and Dhammacariya (Dhamma Teacher) studies.

Religious Examinations and Higher Ordination

In 1985, at age 19, he passed the government examinations conducted by the Ministry of Home and Religious Affairs of the Union of Myanmar, receiving the Sāsanadhaja Dhammācariya title. That same year, he earned a second title—Saddhammodaya Dhammācariya—by passing the Bago Sasana Mandaing Pali University’s Pali-medium exam with first-class honors. Additionally, before completing his first Vassa (monastic retreat) as a fully ordained monk, he earned a third title—Abhipāla Dhammācariya—at the Shan-language Dhammacariya examinations organized by the All Shan State Sangha Association in Panglong.

Following these academic achievements, on May 2, 1985, he received higher ordination (Upasampadā) at the Khandha Ordination Hall of Wai Zayanta Monastery in Mawlamyine.

Higher Education and Academic Journey

Sayadaw continued his studies in Buddhist literature and the English language across Mandalay, Yangon, and Thailand. In 1990, he traveled to Sri Lanka to further his academic career, earning three master's-level degrees:

Master of Arts (MA) from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, Colombo (1992)
Second Master of Arts (MA) from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka (1993)
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka (1996)

While attending university, he taught Buddhism classes in English to Sri Lankan students on weekends.

International Missionary Work

Since 1993, Sayadaw has conducted Vipassana meditation retreats in numerous countries, including Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, South Korea, Hungary, Spain, and Thailand. He has also established branch monasteries of the Oxford Buddha Vihara.

He has served as an organizer, Secretary-General, and Vice President of the International Council for the United Nations Day of Vesak (ICUNDV), where he currently serves as an executive officer. In 2007, he brought together Buddhist universities worldwide to establish two major international bodies:

International Association of Buddhist Universities (IABU)
International Association of Theravada Buddhist Universities (IATBU)

He serves as the Secretary-General for both associations, guiding global Buddhist missionary initiatives.

Domestic Missionary and Social Work

Since 2005, appointed as a Professor by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Sayadaw has served at the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University on Dhamma Pala Hill, Mayangone Township, Yangon.

Furthermore, he established the Save the Mother Earth (S.M.E.) Group, a youth social service initiative.

Open every day except Sunday, the library is actively used by monks, nuns, and lay researchers conducting Buddhist studies.
